Induction hardening is a process that uses induction heating to heat a part of the metal and quench the heated area. This causes a martensitic transformation in the metal component, which increases its brittleness and hardness. Induction hardening is used to selectively harden specific parts of a metal component without affecting the entire metal part or changing its basic physical properties.


Induction hardening is mainly used on steel and involves heating by fluctuating and alternating magnetic fields to induce high temperatures suitable for initiating transformation in the metal part, followed by immediate quenching of the metal part. The physical properties of the core component as well as the metal part remain unchanged. On the other hand, the hardness of the treated metal part increases many times. The two most suitable metals for this treatment are alloy steel and carbon.


The induction hardening process is used to treat many mechanical parts such as shafts, springs, spindles and gears to ensure better performance. The effectiveness depends on a number of factors, such as the introduction of residual stresses and the properties of the modified surface material. The whole process improves the durability of the treated metal. Medium carbon steels hardened by this process are widely used in the manufacture of critical automotive parts where improved wear resistance is required.

Cooling system: The machine also features a cooling system to dissipate the heat generated during the induction hardening process. This is important to prevent overheating and damage to the machine.

Safety features: Induction hardening machines often come equipped with safety features such as emergency stop buttons, thermal overload protection, and interlocks to prevent the operator from accessing the machine during the heating and cooling process.

Conveyor system: Some induction hardening machines also have a conveyor system that automatically moves parts through the heating and cooling process. This allows for high-volume production and reduces the need for manual handling of the parts.

Multiple frequency capabilities: Some machines can operate at multiple frequencies, which enables them to work with a wide range of metal parts and achieve different levels of hardness.

Power supply: The machine requires a high-power supply, often in the range of several hundred kilowatts. This is necessary to generate the high-frequency currents required for induction heating.
